Maher advised the Democrats to become a party of common sense to prevent their party from getting “their a** kicked in November.” The Democrats are going to have a hard time in the 2022 midterm elections, trying to protect their majority, according to a report. So, like have I changed? No, because if someone had said 20 years ago ‘I’m not sure looting is a bad thing,’ I would’ve opposed it then. “Five years ago, no one was talking about abolishing the police,” Maher said. Maher noted the left’s rhetoric shifted to extreme topics like defunding the police and a host of other insane ideas. I’m not sure… we didn’t spend a trillion to bail out the economy in 2008.” “I mean, I understand we had to do something with the pandemic. “I feel I’m the same guy, but five years ago we hadn’t spent $6 trillion to stay home,” he added. “People say to me, ‘Don’t you think you’ve gotten more conservative?’ No, I haven’t,” Maher charged. There's something about Real Time- not just that Maher is funny and is on the ball with current events- that makes it a solid, thought provoking hour of television, especially in times like these. Finally the show ends with "New Rules", that vary from small laughs to the biggest Maher gives on the show.
While his audience is sometimes more leaning to the left, he doesn't shy away from having on the right wing or conservatives, and then it brings about intelligent, sometimes cringe-worthy, discussions. Often news shows try and make things "fair and balanced" (and the station that professes this the most does it the least), but Maher keeps it real. But then come the guests, and this is where the goods come in. Then he moves into the typical news of the week. The show starts off often with a great opening joke of the week, with Maher sometimes in costume (I think I once saw him as the Pope), or with actors playing some strange, hilarious part. While his counterpart, Jon Stewart, has perhaps the best overall program of political/social satire on cable, Maher's program follows very close behind.
In an time when the pundits and talking heads on the "news" networks, or what constitutes as them, bring on guests with usually partisan sides, and making wisecracks that aren't funny, there's Bill Maher. You don't really have choice in this country. George Carlin: I'll tell you, listen, just listen for a minute and learn a little something! Elections and politicians are in place in order to give Americans the ILLUSION that they have freedom of choice. Listen, these elections are a charade, they're a charade. The owners of this country don't care about the poor, in general. They're not high on the conscious or the subconscious list of those people how are in charge of things in this country, the owners. George Carlin: I don't care if you love me or not. Jim Glassman: George, I love you, George, but that's nonsense. It shouldn't be a surprise that rich, white men don't care about poor, black people, period. You began a sentence a little while ago with 'It shouldn't be a surprise'. George Carlin: Jim, Jim, calm down, calm down.
